Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art is pleased to present The Not So Distant Outskirts an installation of new work by Sara Gates. Gates will be recreating a "home" within the walls of the gallery, complete with facade, windows, front door, front yard, and a complete living space within the structure. She uses printed patterns and painterly marks to obsessively decorate the walls, furnishings, and other domestic objects within the interior space.
Her installation fixates on functionality verses extravagance. The interior seems to include the basic necessities, however they are purely decorative objects, the books are stuck to the shelves and the refrigerator is glued shut. Instead the attention has been placed on adorning the room, creating beauty without practicality.
Gates is interested in the constructs of a painting and how those tropes can be investigated via three-dimensional objects. While never deceiving the viewer of the original function of the objects in her installation, Gates has constructed a space in which painting can be explored through a domestic environment. The placement of the objects within the space is more in reference to the composition of a painting than the functionality of the room.
The Not So Distant Outskirts opens on Thursday, November 12, 2009 with an opening reception from 6-9 pm. The exhibition features the work of New York artist, Sara Gates and includes installation, printmaking and painting. The show closes on Saturday, December 19, 2009.
